Wimbleon - Preview

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

The Luxilon team (now combined with Wilson professional tour distribution) have moved into their Wimbledon house and are busy preparing for the steady stream of players who will take the short walk from the site to pick up product.

Wilson/Luxilon houseAlthough considered by many to be the premier event of the pro tennis year, Wimbledon tends to be a little less hectic than many of the other major tournaments as far as product distribution is concerned. Most players have, by this time, made all their decisions about what they are going to play with for the rest of the year and have received their new equipment and most of their string stock. By the time Wimbledon rolls around, most are simply restocking for this event and the hard court season.

But that doesn’t mean that the staff wont be busy from morning until night. There will be a constant stream of players to take care of with product, news, gossip, the latest technology and, of course, a good English cup of tea.

Birgit (’Biggi’) Ziener, Marketing Co-ordinator for Amer Sports Europe, manages the distribution centre and ensures that players get what they need and when they need it. She also spends a lot of time around the courts and player lounge at the event to keep in contact with the many Luxilon-sponsored players at the event.

Biggi is 28 years old and from Munich, Germany, a native Bavarian, and works out of the Munich office as part of the European Marketing Team.

She completed a European Sport Management degree and began her career in sports marketing as an intern with a first division Munich Soccer Club. She was also part of the organizing committee of the Tennis Masters Series event in 2004 in Madrid, Spain. In 2006 she was a Marketing Assistant for the Bavarian Soccer Federation and heavily involved for the 2006 World Cup.

In her current position -and with responsibility for the needs of players using the world’s favorite pro string (over 65% of ATP players and over 40% of WTA players use Luxilon strings) - she has a lot of players to keep track of and keep happy.

But, fortunately for her, she is not alone in looking after players’ interests. Massimo Calvelli, European Tour Manager, is constantly on hand to make sure that players’ needs are taken care of and Michael Wallace, Global Director of Sports Marketing and Tour is also on hand and takes a personal interest in the Wimbledon operation. Ron Rocchi - Global Tour Equipment Manager - is also available to advise on customization and provide equipment assistance.
